Nigeria Continue to impress at the Paralympics, setting records and rising to 7th on medal's table.

Team Nigeria added more medals to its haul on Saturday, after Esther Oyema and Joy Onaolapo won gold in the women’s powerlifting at the London 2012 Paralympics.

Oyema, a gold medallist at the 2010 Commonwealth Games, set a new world record of 135kg in the -48kg class to win gold at the ExCeL – South Arena 3.

Russia’s Olesya Lafina won the silver after lifting 120kg and China’s Shanshan Shi got the bronze medal with her 114kg lift.

Onaolapo, 29, also set a new world record in the -52kg class. Like Oyema, she beat a Russian and a Chinese to the gold medal.

Tamara Podpalnaya of Russia won silver, lifting 119kg, while China’s Cuijuan Xiao lifted 118kg to settle for bronze.

Ifeanyi Nnajiofor failed to replicate the women’s feat as he dropped to second place to win silver in the men’s -60kg class after lifting 188kg in his last attempt.

Iran’s Nader Moradi won gold after lifting 196kg, while China’s Quanxi Yang won the bronze with his 185kg lift.

In the men’s wheelchair tennis, Nigeria’s No.2, Wasiu Yusuf defeated USA’s Noah Yablong 6-2, 6-3 in the Round of 64 at Eton Manor. It took Yusuf a total of 57 minutes to wrap up the game and advance to the Round of 32.

His teammate, Alex Adewale failed to win a single set against Nicolas Peifer of France as he went down 6-0, 6-1 in the Round of 64.

Team Nigeria now has four gold and three silver medals to stay at seventh position in the medals table on Saturday. China are atop the table with 16 gold, 12 silver and 19 bronze medals, while Great Britain are currently second with nine gold, 15 silver and 11 bronze medals.
