Al-Qaeda plots fresh attacks on Nigeria, others
As the country struggles to curb the violent activities of the Islamic fundamentalist sect, Boko Haram, international intelligence agencies have uncovered plans by al-Qaeda, to launch fresh attacks on Nigeria, Ghana and two other African countries.Al-Qaeda, which was founded by the late Osama bin Laden, has launched attacks all over the world.
Investigations by SUNDAY PUNCH authoritatively showed that the targeted countries were receiving help from Western nations on how to prevent the onslaught.
However, it was not clear if the attacks would be launched by al-Qaeda in the Maghreb or the main terrorist organisation in the country.
The Deputy Force Public Relations Officer, Mr. Frank Mba, confirmed the al-Qaeda plot to our correspondent.
Mba, however, noted that such threats were received in the past, and added that security agencies were determined to ensure the group’s plan did not succeed.
According to him, the police are receiving immense support from developed countries that have counter- terrorism expertise.
Mba said, “That al-Qaeda and similar groups want to attack some certain countries is not new. As security operatives, we treat information at our disposal with uttermost care. We test their veracity and analyse them.
“Here in Nigeria, we stop most of the domestic attacks before they take place. We defuse more bombs than they detonate. We save thousands of lives daily but we do this discretely and quietly.
“More than ever, we have so much support from the international community. We are getting help from both ECOWAS and western countries. We are doing our best with the resources we have and we will continue to do so.
“We have stepped up security everywhere but we won’t disclose how we are doing that and the specifics of our mechanisms.
“I want to assure Nigerians and the international community that government is irrevocably committed to its mandate of providing adequate security in the country.”
Ghana, another country on the radar of al-Qaeda, last Tuesday stepped up security at its Kotoka International Airport, Accra, with heavy deployment of soldiers, who frisked passengers using metal detectors.
Armed troops are not a regular feature in Kotota and Ghanaians described the movement of troops as strange.
On Tuesday, Daily Guide, a newspaper in Ghana, had reported that, “Nigeria, three others are said to be on the radar of the terrorist group. Ghana is also said to be on a hit list of an international terrorist group, leading to deployment of soldiers at the Kotoka International Airport, Accra.
“It was learnt that the action of the military was informed by international intelligence fed to Ghana that the country was one of four others being targeted by terrorists for bombing. The presence of the soldiers is therefore a national security response to the alert, a source said.”
When the newspaper contacted Ghana’s Director of the Armed Forces Public Relations Directorate, Col. Mbawine Atintande, he reportedly explained that “there are only a few military policemen at the (airport) place.”
As to whether the operation was a response to certain international threat, Akintande said he would find out.
Just on August 3, 2012, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office of the United Kingdom warned travellers to Ghana that there was an “underlying threat from terrorism” in the country.
“Attacks could be indiscriminate, including in places visited by expatriates and foreign travellers,” it said.
Al-Qaeda‘s foot prints abound in Nigerian as it has cells in the northern part of the country and had also claimed responsibility for some terrorist activities.
In April, the State Security Service arrested Mohammed Ashafa said to be al-Qaeda linkman with a terror group in Nigeria.
Ashafa was reportedly apprehended by the Pakistani government through the National Intelligence Agency and handed over to the Federal Government for prosecution.
When he was arraigned at the Federal High Court, the SSS told the court that the accused person facilitated terrorist exchange programmes between al-Qaeda and its allies in the country.
The intelligence agency further said its investigations showed that Ashafa was allegedly the second in command to one Adnan Ibrahim, who was said to be the Resident al-Qaeda chief in West Africa, but based in Kano.
Also, in May, al-Qaeda in the Maghreb claimed responsibility for the murder of a German, Edgar Raupach, in Kano.
Raupach was killed by his abductors when security forces tried to free him during a rescue operation.
A Briton, Christopher McManus, and an Italian, Franco Lamolinara suffered similar fate in March.

Breivik: ‘I’m sorry for not killing more’ after killing 69 people
Mass murderer Anders Behring Breivik has apologised to “militant nationalists” for not killing more people during a shooting spree and bomb attack in Norway.
He was speaking after a five-judge panel in Oslo ruled he was sane as he killed 77 people last year and sentenced him to 21 years in jail.
Breivik – who claimed the killings were necessary to stop the “Islamisation” of the country – also said he did not accept the “illegitimate” judgement, but would not appeal the verdict.
“I wish to apologise to all militant nationalists that I wasn’t able to execute more,” he said before his remarks were cut off by the presiding judge.
As the judges convicted Breivik of terrorism and premeditated murder, sentencing him to 21 years in a high security prison, he smirked to the court.
Sky’s Robert Nisbet, reporting from Oslo, said Breivik would probably spend the rest of his life behind bars with the justice system increasing his sentence in five year increments.
He added the declaration that Breivik was not insane was exactly what the killer wanted.
“He wanted to be viewed as a warrior against multiculturalism, not a madman,” he said.
Nisbet said in its 90-page document on the judgement, the court said Breivik was narcissistic and had a personality disorder, but was not insane.
He was not aggressive or defensive when questioned by police which usually happens with psychotic defendants.
Lawyers for the 33-year-old right-wing extremist said before the decision that Breivik would appeal any insanity ruling, which he said would be “worse than death”, but accept a prison sentence.
Outside Norway, the sentence was seen by many as mild. The maximum sentence allowed under Norwegian law is 21 years but such sentences can be extended as long as an inmate is considered too dangerous to be released.
As judges took turns reading sections of the ruling, people were crying inside the courtroom as they relived the horror of the killing spree. Many families of the victims and survivors were present.
Some who lost loved ones in the attacks welcomed the ruling.
“Now we won’t hear about him for quite a while. Now we can have peace and quiet,” Per Balch Soerensen, whose daughter was among those killed in the shooting massacre, told Denmark’s TV2.
“He doesn’t mean anything to me, he is just air.”
Per Anders Langerod, a Utoya survivor, said: “I actually want to visit him in his jail cell and yell at him…really hard for 15 minutes, 20 minutes, throw some plates on the floor, you know, show anger.”
Another survivor of the Utoya Island attack, Tore Bekkedal, said more important than the outcome of the trial was the way the whole process was conducted “in accordance with the standards of our society”.
“Everyone has been determined to prove the strength of the values of our society, the very values he attacked.”
He added: “We didn’t want to grant him the satisfaction of seeing us abandon our principles and abandon what we believe in simply because he tried to tell us to.”
Bjorn Kasper Ilaug, who rescued 24 youngsters from the island of Utoya, told Sky News he was relieved.
“I hoped for this. It means we can move forward and justice is done. I hope the Norwegian authorities do not appeal this verdict.”
Sky News reporter Trygve Sorvaag, who was inside court, said the 40-day trial has cost £7m.
He added that the people of Norway are pleased with the verdict, which has strengthened their belief in the justice system. Tweets expressed how Norwegians could now move on after the harrowing massacre.

Victor Moses to Chelsea at Last!
The 21-year-old, who featured for the Latics against the European champions last week, agreed personal terms to complete his switch to Stamford Bridge.No details were released regarding the fee or the length of Moses’ contract.
Wigan chairman Dave Whelan accused Chelsea last week of “messing about” over the fee to be paid for Moses, with the Blues’ offers up to that point conditional on add-ons and Wigan thought to be holding out for around £9million.
A bid was finally accepted on Thursday and Moses was given permission to discuss personal terms.
Moses represented England up to under-21 level before switching allegiance to Nigeria for his senior international career.
He emerged from Crystal Palace’s academy to make his first-team debut in 2007, before joining the Latics in 2010 and making 74 league appearances with eight goals.

Two murder suspects who were paraded today by the Lagos State Police Command, Ikeja, Echezona Nwabufor, 33, and Ezekiel Nnechuwu Olisa Eloka, 23, have narrated how they drugged the daughter of a retired General, Miss Cynthia Akuzogwu Udoka, 25, and strangled her in order to steal her money.
One of the suspects, Eloka, said they killed Cynthia because they thought she had a lot of money in her possession. But after the dastardly act, they did not find a reasonable amount of money on her.
According to the suspects, “we met her on the facebook on our Blackberry. We invited her to come to Lagos to buy goods at cheap prices.
“When she got to Lagos, we took her to a hotel in Festac. We thought she had a lot of money, but she said she didn’t have any money. We gave her Reflon tablet in her Ribena drink. After this, we slept with her for 12 hours in that hotel. We discovered that the tablet did not work quickly on her.
“We then attacked her, tied her up and used cellotape to cover her mouth. After that, webeat her to tell us where she kept the money.
“When we didn’t get any money from her, we tied her mouth and strangled her and then we abandoned her in the hotel and fled.”
The suspects and the General’s daughter became friends on Facebook and were exchanging messages and phone calls.
She told them she was coming to Lagos. They met her at Murtala Muhammed Airport, Ikeja from where they ushered her into a hotel in Festac town, Lagos.
Briefing journalists on how policemen were able to arrest the suspects, Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Umar Abubakar Manko, said detectives made use of the close circuit television, CCTV, at the hotel where the crime was committed to identify them.
The Area Commander, Area ‘E’ Police Command, ACP Okoro added that the suspects who are undergraduates of Nigerian universities were nabbed through the call logs of the telephone conversations they had with the late Cynthia who was a post graduate student of Nasarawa State University.
When the suspected killers strangled Cynthia, they deposited her corpse at the mortuaryof Isolo General Hospital in Lagos.
ACP Okoro stated that many ATM cards, about 23 SIM cards, different identity cards were recovered from the suspects.
Police sources said the two suspects will soon be arraigned in court to answer a charge of murder.
13 teenage chinese Prostitutes arrested
13 teenage Chinese prostitutes have been arrested and detained by the Nigerian Immigration Service following a raid of their base on Emina Crescent, off Toyin Street, Ikeja. The immigration service raided the apartment following a tip off. More than 40 teenage girls were brought into the country and camped in an apartment for Nigerian politicians, business executives and expatriates to hire for sex at the cost of between $1,000 and $2,500. The cartel was run by Chinese couple named Sun and Yin Li.
They've been operating for a while and a source in the know said the business was booming and the couple were in the process of importing more girls before they were raided. Only 13 girls were picked from the apartment. The Chinese couple, along with some other girls, managed to escape from the apartment and are now in hiding.
NIS spokesman, Joachim Olumba confirmed the arrest and said the girls are in their custody. He also said they are on the trail of the kingpin of the sex ring. And after investigations, they will either deport the girls or hand them over to their embassy here in Nigeria for appropriate action

Apple wins over $1 billion in suit against samsung
Most people were expecting the jury in the Apple vs. Samsung patent fight to deliberate for a couple of weeks. But maybe it wasn’t a surprise that they handed in a decision after just three days: the venue was San Jose, Calif. If a chocolate company wanted to win a multibillion-dollar lawsuit, they’d want the case decided by juries selected from Hershey, Penn. Apple couldn’t have had any more favorable a venue than its own backyard. Whether the home field advantage was a factor or not, the result was startling and unequivocal: a near-total victory for Apple. Almost all of Apple’s patents were upheld (the exception being their purported ownership of the basic concept of devices with rounded corners), and the jury awarded Apple $1.05 billion of the $2.5 billion they demanded from Samsung.
An award of this size means that an appeal that lasts until the heat death of the universe is inevitable. To Samsung, a company less-sexy than Apple but similarly wealthy, a $1.1 billion judgment isn’t ruinous. But if the decision stands, it’ll make it far, far more difficult, expensive, and risky to be a company that designs phones and tablets.
Apple wasn’t the only big winner Friday. Every company that already entered into a licensing agreement with Apple — essentially buying the right to make phones and tablets without getting their legs broken — is considering those per-unit licensing fees to be money exceptionally well-spent.
Microsoft, eager to finally establish their own beachhead in these markets, entered into a cross-licensing agreement with Apple several years ago. Windows Phone 8 and Microsoft Surface now have a clear run to the goal line.
The jury didn’t necessarily say, “Samsung copied the iPhone.” Technically, they said “Apple holds patents on many broad ideas of mobile device design and multitouch user interface. Samsung violated those patents, and in almost every case they did so knowingly.” The lesson here is that the so-called Patent Wars, mostly a campaign of skirmishes before now, has suddenly turned into global thermonuclear war.
Thus, the most ironic winners on Friday were Nokia and Research In Motion. These two companies, driven to their knees by the stagnated dowdiness of their products and intense competition from the iPhone, are now attractive companies to own, thanks to their large and longstanding portfolio of mobile device patents.
Google spent $12.5 billion to acquire Motorola’s mobile division last year. If they wanted Motorola for its design and manufacturing savvy, isn’t it interesting that Google’s successful Android tablet bore a prominent ASUS logo?
Samsung will be fine. The biggest losers here are consumers. If the verdict stands, then the costs of the judgment will be reflected in the cost of mobile devices. Furthermore, other manufacturers will feel the need to buy Apple’s official permission to build useful phones, passing down the possible $20-per-handset fee.
And it’s possible that the next great phone, the one that shames the iPhone the same way that the iPhone buried the Blackberry, will never make it to market. Designing and selling an advanced smartphone just became a dangerous business.
An Apple spokesperson thanked the jury, insisting that the lawsuits against Samsung were about values. “We make these products to delight our customers, not for our competitors to flagrantly copy.”
Which seems like a bold way to characterize the jury’s findings, given the esoteric specifics of the ruling.
Friday’s verdict doesn’t feel like justice. It feels like the day when Apple lost a hunk of its public persona as sweet hippies motivated by excellence and freedom, who win by making the best products.

It all started with Walt Disney when he created the cartoon, Alice in Wonderland in 1923. This was a time when motion pictures did not have sounds. The two brothers started their studio to make this series of cartoon films in their uncle's garage. From then onwards, it was progress nonstop. Today, their studio is one of the most popular studios in Hollywood.
It was in 1954 the company got the idea of developing a place where both parents and children could enjoy fun in one place. In a few years, it became a very popular place of visit for children. Visitors from all over America started coming in. Later, the place got so popular even visitors from other countries were attracted to it. After its opening in July 1955, Disneyland got a major expansion which included it getting the country's first monorail system. In 1965 Disney World was announced and this included the creation of a massive complex that offered all types of entertainment.
Walt Disney is the man behind the creation of Walt Disneyland. From humble beginnings in 1923 it has become the world's largest multimedia company.

TIME MANAGEMENT: How to do it!
Hats off. By looking to improve your time management you are on your way. Most students won't make such an effort. So you have a big advantage.
The work load in high school is a lot. But if you know how to manage it and know the right study skills, it can be far simpler. There's more.
There are a lot of ways to improve your time management. But not all of them are worth your time. The 3 below are ones that will have a big impact for you. They will get you a lot of results, for a smaller effort.
Which I like a lot more than the reverse. A big effort and no results. Let's get started.
Make sure that you...
Keep Energy High
When you are a bit tired, it's extremely difficult to get things done. Nothing new. We've all been there.
And you already know getting enough sleep is important. But I'll bet you've overlooked this other source of low energy.
The foods you eat. When you eat heavy foods such as white meat (especially in large amounts) your body's energy level takes a sharp dive.
Perhaps not immediately, but within the hour. And at that point, it doesn't matter how much will power you have, your studies simply won't get done.
You just can't focus.
You've probably felt this but weren't sure why. But also remember to...
Have A Routine
When you sit down to study, do you have a clear system that you follow? If not, you are going to struggle. Here's why.
You will be far more susceptible to the whims of your mind. Not only that, any time you feel confused about what to do you get a bad idea. "Maybe I should do this later instead."
By having a clear system that you follow, you'll know exactly what to do, will cut out confusion and the procrastination it causes. And be able to remember more and do your work in less time.
Now, that might sound exaggerated but it really isn't. And here's the kicker.
You don't need to figure it out yourself. There is an extremely good book on the topic. It's called "How to Maximize Your Memory" By Ramon Campayo. Now don't let the title fool you. It teaches you an entire study system, not just how to increase your memory.
I know you'll love the results.
